What Does the Square Root Symbol Look Like?
The square root symbol (√, also called the radical sign or radix) has a tick on the left and a horizontal bar extending to the right over the expression. In plain text — like this page — only the tick portion (√) is used. In typeset mathematics, the bar extends the full width of the expression underneath.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this paste into social media fields?
Yes. Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Instagram captions, Facebook posts, and WhatsApp all support Unicode characters including √. Paste normally with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V.
Does the font affect whether √ displays correctly?
Rarely. Most modern fonts — Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, Georgia, system UI fonts — include √. If a very niche decorative font omits it, the operating system falls back to a system font automatically.
Is √ the same as a checkmark?
No. The square root symbol (√ U+221A) and the checkmark (✓ U+2713) are different Unicode characters. They can look similar at small sizes but are distinct. For a checkmark, use ✓ or ✔.
How do I type √ on mobile?
Copy-paste is the easiest method on mobile — tap Copy √ above, then paste. On iPhone you can also long-press the keyboard and search “radical” in the special characters section. On Android, use the Gboard emoji keyboard symbol search.
